🔥 Keeping Babies & Toddlers Safe Around Fireplaces This Autumn & Winter

There’s nothing cosier than a crackling fire on a chilly day - but as little ones become mobile and curious, it’s important to make sure your home stays both warm and safe.

🧸 Create a safe zone
In my First Aid and Home Safety courses I share the importance of fireguards. Use a sturdy fireguard that’s fixed securely to the wall or hearth - one that can’t be pulled over by little hands. Keep at least a metre’s space between the guard and the fire so the heat can circulate safely.

👣 Watch those exploring feet
Even when the fire isn’t lit, ashes, soot and soot-stained tools can be tempting! Keep tools, matches, lighters, and logs well out of reach.

🔥 Cool doesn’t always mean safe
Fireplaces and stove surfaces stay hot long after the flames go out - teach toddlers early that they’re look-but-don’t-touch zones.

💨 Check carbon monoxide safety
If you use a gas, wood or coal fire, make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector in the same room - and test it regularly.

💡 Supervision is key
Never leave your baby or toddler unattended in a room with an open fire, even for a moment - little ones move faster than we think!

A warm home and a safe one can go hand in hand - it’s all about a few mindful steps and a good fireguard ❤️

After the outdoor workout - surrounded by golden leaves and fresh autumn air - we gathered in the cosy @thepavilionbyhowlingowl for a some downtime. I shared a gentle autumn meditation, a few self-care tips, and some reflections on gratitude and glimmers - those tiny moments of joy that can brighten even the trickiest day over ☕️ & 🍰 ✨ plus wellness treats.

☕ Autumn Burns & Hot Drinks – Keeping Little Ones Safe

Autumn brings cosy vibes – warm drinks, comforting soups, and heaters – but it also increases the risk of burns for curious babies and toddlers. I see this ALL the time working in A&E. Here’s how to keep your little ones safe:

✨ Practical Tips:

Keep hot drinks and soups out of reach of little hands.

Use spill-proof travel cups if you’re on the move.

Be mindful of heaters, radiators, and hot pans – a toddler’s reach is sneaky!

🩹 First Aid for Minor Burns:

Cool the burn immediately under running lukewarm water for 10–20 minutes.

Cover with a clean, non-fluffy cloth or a sterile dressing.

Avoid ice or butter – these can make it worse.

⚠️ Seek medical help if:

The burn is large, blistering, or deep.

Your child is in significant pain or the burn involves the face, hands, feet, or genitals.

As you walk across the lawn and step through the door, your shoulders will drop. Calming music, gentle scents, soft cushions, blankets, cosy socks, toys, and a comfy chair all wait to wrap you in comfort.

I’ll make you a cuppa and have something yummy ready. You’ll find wellness treats and moments of relaxation just for you - and connection with other parents on the same rollercoaster. As well as the professional support you need and deserve. I have been lucky enough to support parents for 30 years.

You’ll leave feeling calmer, lighter, and no longer alone. 🌸

🍂 Autumn Head Injuries – Toddlers on the Move

Autumn is beautiful… but slippery leaves, wet pavements, and little feet on the move mean toddlers are more likely to have bumps and falls. Here’s what I see all time working in A&E and what you need to know as a parent:

✨ How to Avoid Falls:

Keep a close eye on toddlers on slippery pavements or wet leaves.

Encourage safe shoes with good grip.

Avoid carrying hot drinks or heavy shopping at the same time as little ones.

Make play areas safe, especially near steps or uneven surfaces.

✨ If a Bump Happens:

Most minor bumps are harmless. Look for:

Immediate reaction from your toddler (crying, fussing)

Cuts, bruises, or swelling

Manage minor cuts or bumps at home: cold compresses for bumps, clean cuts, gentle pressure for small grazes.

No need to keep your child awake overnight if they’re alert and responsive.

⚠️ Seek professional advice if:

Your child is unusually drowsy, vomiting, has a seizure, a serious cut, or any signs that worry you.

These days are some of my absolute favourites — the Studio is filled with laughter, chatter, and the gentle buzz of parents and little ones creating memories that last a lifetime.

Taking your little one out and about while weaning can feel tricky, but with a few simple tips, it can be smooth, stress-free, and even fun!

✨ Top Tips:

A bit of your food is fine – don’t stress about salt for a ‘one-off’ meal out. Babies can enjoy a little taste safely.

Be careful with reheating – asking for food to be warmed up can backfire: it can end up boiling hot and inedible. Bring ready-to-eat portions whenever possible.

Mess prep is essential – carry plenty of wipes, a change of clothes, and extra layers (colder than summer!).

If you’re finding things tough, please know that asking for help isn’t a weakness - it’s a sign of strength and self-awareness. You deserve support just as much as your baby does. 💛 As a Mum of two teens I am winging it too. I see you & hear you. And am here for you.

Take one small step for your wellbeing - a deep breath, a short walk, a chat with someone who “gets it,” or simply reminding yourself:

🌟Safety tip🌟Carrying your baby in a sling is a wonderful way to keep close and cosy, but autumn brings a few extra hazards to watch for:

🍂 Slippy ground – Wet leaves, acorns, and mud can catch you off guard. Take smaller steps and good grip footwear helps.

☕ Hands free matters – Try not to juggle hot drinks or shopping bags while carrying your baby. Keep your hands free to steady yourself if needed. I see these accidents working in A&E ALL the time. And I remember well how tempting it is to have your coffee or shopping bags

👶 Your balance changes – With baby snug on your front, your centre of gravity shifts (as when you were pregnant!). Move a little slower, especially on uneven ground.

🧡 Sling carrying is beautiful bonding – just take extra care in the autumn months so you and baby stay safe and comfortable.
